1. The defference between the two sentences is whether something that is written in the sentence is possible or not in actuality. The former is possible in actuality although it is uncertain, while the later have only a remote possibility. (Or we may be able to say it’s impossible positively. )

1) The difference between 2 sentences is made by speaker’s estimate. In the second sentence, speakers think it is not built on facts.
2) If I am 20 years old, I will be able to drink.  If I were genius, I  would stop studying.
3) 話し手が「現実に起こりうることか、現実では起こらないことか」を判断して使います。2)の例文では、自分が中学生だとするといずれは20歳になるので、現実に起こる可能性はありますが、2つ目の文は「自分が天才だったら」のように仮定をし、現実と矛盾することなので仮定法を使っています。

1. I think the difference between the 2 sentences is whether it has a possibility or not.The former sentence has a possibility to be prenty of water.But the latter doesn’t have a possibility to be prenty of water. So it can be expressed that there can’t be prenty of water because they don’t build a reservoir.
