Blogging Assignment 2 (Due April 28 May 5, 2009)

Hello ETM 3 members!

For your next blogging task I would like you to discuss what kind of grammar you found most difficult to learn when you were a junior high school student and how you eventually learned it. When you are finished, please try to comment on another ETM 3 member’s post. For your reference please look at this diagram of the grammar that junior high school students are required to learn.

To show you an example of what I am expecting, I will blog below about Japanese grammar that was difficult for me to learn. Please read it before writing your post.

Before I first came to Japan, I took a 1 month class on Japanese and did not understand it at all. The most difficult grammar for me to learn was adjective verbs or 形容動詞. An example of an adjective verb is “omoshirokatta desu”. When I was studying Japanese I had had experience studying other foreign languages and was not intimidated by grammar. However, the concept of an “adjective verb” was completely bizarre to me. I remember thinking “why can’t adjectives just be adjectives, why do the have to ask as verbs?” Whenever adjective verbs appeared on a test, I would always get a 0 for that section. When I came to Japan I started hearing words such as “tanoshikatta” “omoshirokatta” and I started to use them after about 6 months in Japan. However, at this time I had not idea that I was using adjective verbs. After living in Japan for two years, I returned to the USA to study. When I was in graduate school, I took a Japanese class and when taking this class, I finally realized what adjective verbs were and how to use them. The teacher never taught me what an adjective verb was, one day I just “realized”. It was a little bit of a strange experience.

Blogging Assignment 3 (Due Wednesday, May 13, 2009)

The grammar What I found most difficult is how to add
’s’,'es’ ,’ies’ or ‘ves’for the plural form in my junior high school days.
Generally, normal noun can be added ’s’ to become plural form.
But sometimes, the words which can be added ‘es’ ,’ies’or’ves’appered.
And once in a while, special words appeared.

    For example,man→men
    fish→fish

Now sometimes I have a miss these words.
So in junior high school, this problems made me confused.
