English Teaching Methodologies Class Blog at a Japanese University

Grammar and Practice(Noon & Untom)

Video:

By Untom

Our class’s goal was to understand “Could you tell me the way to the ~”.

At first, I explained the purpose of this class in japanese. Because impressing image helps students to learn sentence. And next, I said the sentence “Could you~” peformed stranger. After that , I explained japanese meaning and repeated with Noon. Then I thought students could repeat easily because there weren’t difficult words. However, these words were new of them. So I should have repeated one by one.

Next, we taught the sentence changed the place. Then we used a picture. Picture prompts is the basic and good way to teach the sentence. So I drew a town map and use it. I think students are bored when they continue to read English words. Watching a picture make student refresh and interested. After that we had students do pair work. This is basic way to teach, too.

Lastly, we had students make sentence individual. We only say the place, and students make sentence theirselves. The purpose of this activity is to  think and memorize “Could you~”. To say themselves, they could understand sure.

By Noon

(1)We tried to teach  ‘could you tell me the way to ~’

(2)First,Untom and I talked for using ‘could you tell me the way to~’ .

Untom asked me and I answered the question. Next the students

challenged the quiz for placing the word cards. This work is easy and

simple, interest. So this trial was good,I think.

(3)Repetition -Single word prompts -Free substitution -Picture prompts -

We did these things for practicing students. If we tried to do that repetition stepped

by and by,  i.e  1)Excuse me

                        2)Could you

                       3)Could you tell me

4)Could you tell me the way to

5)Could you tell me the way to the GEO.   →More rhythmic.

4) This teaching was successful but there were some mistake and things for improvment.

The improvment were  1)How to repete

2)The way to gather  the student’s attention.

3)The picture (It’s better for adding the real place.)

5)We tried to attempt to manage the class for Picture, voice tone(GEO),pair work.

But it was not good to warn the noisy student. So next, I wanted to try to gaze the student or

say the student’s name.

    Noon and Untom,
I thought that both of you made a good team and your visuals were very helpful. You both had a very good presence.

To make your lesson even better, please consider the following:

    1) Noon, when you first introduced “Could you tell me the way to” it was hard to understand. I think it would be better to say it slower at first because the students are hearing it for the first time.
    2) Both of you tended to ignore the problem students. I had a difficult time listening to you because Ukey88 was harassing Forest. Please remind me to talk to ETM3 about how to encourage problem students to pay attention next class.
    3) It was unclear what we were supposed to do during the pair work. Maybe, choral repetition, group substitution and then individual pronunciation practice might have been a little more effective.
    4) If the map had more places labeled it might have been easier to practice.

Content to learn was clear this class. The teaching materials were made neatly, too. So, the class was plain.

When students did the pair work, I thought they might a little bored. Because students could it immediately only by practicing “Could you tell me the way to the~?”.
So, I thought more effective after you teach how to the way ( Go straight and turn left…) to students.

Thank you for your good class!
Your class was very good because it was very smooth and using map was nice, too.
It was easy to understand that only teach how to asking, but teaching how to explain together is more useful.

Yes,because you use the map near here.

    2) Were you clear about what you had to do?
    Yes.

    3) Did the teachers walk around the class and keep you involved in the activity?
    Yes,they did.

I think it was a good idea that you used a map of an area that we knew well. In my opinion, the class would become better, if you had pair work after you tought both how to ask the way and answer.

Anyway, I enjoyed your class. Thank you for your teaching!

    あなた達の授業は楽しかったです。面白かったです。楽しみました。

    でも、様々な練習した方がいいと思います。また、ペアワークは目的があまりなかったと思います。ペアワークの間、質問して、場所のみちあんないを説明したらいいです。

    Thank you for your class.
I enjoyed action of ALT. I lioke your characteristic behavior and your attitude to talk to students.
I think explanation for ‘Could you tell me tha way to the~~~?’ was a little bit short and students wouldn’t be able to really understand that meaning. Using more practice such as repitition and substitution will make your class better.
I enjoyed your class. Good job!!!

    Your class was very fun!
It was good idea to use the big map.
I think, it was a monotonous practice only to use “Could you tell me the way …?”. Especially the pair work was not effective activity. So, it is better not only asking but also answering in the pair work.
    Thank you for your teaching!

I enjoyed your class very much, thank you!
There was impact of ALT, and HRT and ALT were good communication, so your class was smooth.
I thought repetition was too long, so I wanted you to do repetition more creatively.
In addition, your map was easy to understand!
I think my class must be more rhythmical like your class.

I think your class was prepared very well. And your class was successfull because the idea of ALT and HRT was good. Using map was good too!

Your class was active so it was very good. Students can understand how to ask the way to somewhere by your teaching. I have an advise. Pair work should have done after you taught how to answer the quesion. Then we were able to enjoy the pairwork by asking the way and anser the way each other. Anyway, you did a good job.

Thank you for your class! I think it is good idea to use a map. Students are interested in Morioka’s map. But there are diagonal streets, so expressing how to guide is a little difficult.

    Your class was so interesting.
I think that using town map was nice idea. Moreover the map was familiar to students. This is a good point.

But to me regret, there is a bad point. That is reading aloud.
I think that you should get over speed and a pause when you read aloud a text book in front of students.

    thank you.
