Reading Class (SuperJ and Walnuts)

Video

【By Walnuts】

Firstly, we tried to do the review of the last class. I made the summary by using the sentences that were used in the script of the last class. So, I thought student could not only review the last class but also know which sentences they couldn’t understand. I think it’s important that students grasp their own weak point. Otherwise, they can’t overcome the weak point.

Secondly, we had a time to read the text. Before the reading time, we should have devise the way to introduce the today’s class. Because of not having the introduction of today’s class, students couldn’t have image of the contents of this time.

Next, we had a time to answer the question. Firstly, we made students write the answers individually. After that, made them do in a pair. I think we should have made students share the question No.4 (What does the third minister wish for?) in a group, because this answer was different per student. And, if we made them present the best answer of the group to the other students, it might be much fan. And we should have devised the question. In this class, we used “What ~?” and “Why~?” in the questions. We could use much variety of interrogatives, for instance, “”Which~?”, “Where~?”, “When ~?” and so on.

Although I had lots of regret through this teaching practice, I think it really benefited me.

Thank you for taking our class.

    Dear Walnuts and Super J,
Great work today! I liked how you did the review and I thought your teamwork was good and very well organized. Below are some points that I thought could be improved a little bit. After reading what the other ETM3 members say, I will give you my thoughts.

    1) Super Jの読み方について
    2) How to introduce the story.
    3) How to have students do the comprehension questions.
    4) How to reflect on the meaning of the story.
    5) How to have the students answer the comprehension questions

I thought your class was very smooth. It is good to have enough time for reading. And your handout was simple, so it helped us to understand contents.
Next, I thought there was the point improve. It’s volume of voice. If you speak clearly, students might listen to you easily.
    Thank you for your class!!

Your class was like a class in junior high school.
Communicationing with pair was very good.
I couldn’t understand the contents in textbook because our thinking time was short.
And I think superj’s how to read was a little fast for junior high school students.
    Thank you!!!

I think the review of the last class is important thing, because students forget soon.So we should review periodically.
And I thought teacher’s reading speed was a little fast, teacher should read more slowly and clearly.
Thank you for your interesting class!!

I thought the group-works was needed in this class. I think pair-works is important but group-works is also important. Very interesting question contains in this story -What does the third minister wish for?-. I feel it is more effective by sharing the idea through some group-works.
Super J’s reading was fast for the junior high school students. Maybe they don’t know the meaning. We have to think students’ pace in speaking, writing, reading and so on.
To introduce the story, this class was a little short of ideas. To introduce the story, teacher often read the passage by themselves. I think it will get better by doing student’s activity; playing games.

it was difficult class for me because i was a LD student.
It was a long story and teacher’s reading was too fast.
please speak more slowly and separate long sentense into shrot phrease.
Pair work was good. i couldn’t read it but reddermon told me how to read it.

    thank you very much.

    P.S. superjさん、日本語が上手になりましたね。

ALT’s reading was so fast to listen for students in junior high school. I wanted you cut sentence, and then I wanted you read. But
    your pronunciation is so good.
    Is it proper?

    thank.

I liked the way of warm-up.In junior high school, teachers usually ask students what day today is.But these questions are meaningless and boring. So I think the question like “what did you eat for breakfast?” can interest the students.

As some people mentioned earlier, superJ’s reading was fast, but he changed his voice for the different characters.I think it was a good pont.

Walnuts intensionally called on Ryo to answer the question.I think that was very important to control the class and to encourage the student because she said “I found a good answer.”

  • 10    minimia // Aug 3, 2009 at 11:04 am

I think reveiw is very important because it could make students to change their mind to the class.
ALT’s reading was too fast to listen. But changing the voice was very good.
And some questions were very good idea to know whether students could understand the content.
    Thank you.

I think this class is typicaly in Japan.
ALT’s reading is too fast, but good listening practice.
Teacher should take care of student’s answer, in this class students have many answers.
If question have many many answers, teacher should do.
    Thanks.

Thank you for your teaching. Your lesson was prepared well. I think ALT’s reading was too fast for junior high school students. Student who is not good at English can’t ask the teacher to speak more slowly. And I think you should grasp the understanding of your students. If there’re some students who don’t understand, you have to help them.

Your class was well organized. I could feel I wnat to join this class, I mean I could concentrate on this class.
In the group work, each students finished their activities at different times. It made students who finished fast get bored. To improve this, you should make extra questions for those students.
The way ALT spoke was a little fast. You don’t have speak or read too much slowly, but you should think about students’ English ability. How fast we can speak or read depends their ability.

    Thnks for very good class.

In class, students could had a chance to listen to native pronunciation. And hiroko’s directions are also clear, it was easy for student to act what teachers had planned

The point to improve is John’s reading speed. It was a little bit fast for junior high school student, and even for me.

The class was very prepared. Maybe you needed more time to do what you had prepared. However, class was moved smoothly in my opinion.

Hi,thank you for your good preparative class.
    ☆The good points were
1)It was very good tempo class.
→I think students are not tired of this kind of class.
    2)The preparation were great!
ex)Handout, how to ask the questions ,how to lead us.
    ★The improvement points were
1)How to make use of the review.
→It’s good that the teacher say the review and speak
    with students.
    2)Teacher’s reading speed.
→superJ’s reading was very smooth and real.
It was very important to study English.
But sometimes teacher should speak more slowly
    for understanding the contents.
So superJ needed to confirm to students
ex)’If you did not understand,I try to read one more.’

Over all, hiroko and john were very good pair.

  • 16    untom // Aug 4, 2009 at 1:53 am

    Thank you for your class.
I think to review last class is good activity. It help students to remember contents . Moreover, some questions is good for students to understand the story.

I think speaking speed is fast. I couldn’t understand some words.
It is the point of improving.

  • 17    sayahh // Aug 4, 2009 at 6:58 am

    Thank you for your class!
It was like a real English class in junior high school, and you looks like real English teacher and ALT.

I liked the handout. It was simple and easy to understand, and questions were appropriate.
However,I thougt your class was little high leveled. There were some students who couldn’t catch up with.

  • 18    3i0n // Aug 4, 2009 at 10:16 am

It was a good reaing class and ideal class. But it was difficult for junior high school students I think.
Teachers spoke English fast, and spoke in a low voice. And teachers looked a little tired so I felt this class was a little gloomy. I want teachers to enjoy a class themselves.
But I thought the handout was very good. Even though I haven’t read this story but I was able to understand it easily. I want to use this idea.

    Thank you for your class!

Thank you for your interesting class!

It was easy to understand what was going in the class because your role as a class room teacher and ALT was well prepared.

I think the work sheet was good, too. It was so practical teaching practicing that I think I can imitate you.

  • 20    Mizuho // Aug 4, 2009 at 11:16 am

The review of the lost class worked properly, so it seemed to be a real class. Hand out was utilized and I think that this class was smooth.

    When ALT read English
    ・To speak English slowly.
・To divide a sentence a little more short and read when student
    read at first.

I think that ALT improve more if careful about these.

  • 21    madan // Aug 5, 2009 at 12:49 am

    Thank you for your hardwork!!!
Your class was good because students had many chances to think .
I think ALT’s reading was a little fast for junior high school students.
